NON-GROUP INSURANCE OPEN ENROLLMENT

For the entire month of October and November, health insurers and HMOs must offer open enrollment for individuals seeking coverage for themselves and their families. They may not be turned away for any reason, including a pre-existing condition.

At the same time, insurers may charge as much as they want for coverage. Nineteen insurers and HMOs are expected to offer coverage in Massachusetts. According to The Boston Globe 10/15/97, a 25-year-old single resident of Boston could pay as little as $157.41 a month for coverage from Harvard Pilgrim or $433.02 with United HealthCare of New England.
